PEI to recognize naturopathic doctors
September 4, 2012 – Great news for Canada's naturopathic community: Prince Edward Island may soon regulate naturopathic doctors under a new legislative act.
Under the new legislation, a single act will replace the 14 different acts presently regulating health professions in the province. The act will include new professions not currently recognized, such as naturopathic doctors, midwives and speech pathologists in addition to the 16 already recognized professions, including doctors, nurses and dentists.
The new legislation will allow the newly recognized professions to form their own government bodies, similar to the College of Physicians and Surgeons.
Seven other provinces already have similar legislation in place. On August 1, 2012 the Alberta Health Minister announced regulation for naturopathic doctors.
The act will be introduced in the legislature this fall.
